We are currently recruiting for Students to fill Production Associate positions at our metal beverage packaging facility in Whitby, Ontario.

 

The successful candidate must be capable of performing various manual and mechanical functions within a high speed production environment while fulfilling health, safety, environmental, quality, food and production standards.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.
  • Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system.
  • Performs duties as required to ensure compliance with the plant’s quality standards.
  • Progressive responsibilities maybe assigned.
  • Assists to perform troubleshooting on production equipment as required.
  • Inputs data on a computer terminal to identify, label, and palletize finished products.
  • Conducts inspection of in-process or finished product.
  • Assist in making adjustments or mechanical repairs to production equipment.
  • Responsible for replenishing supplies required for assigned area.
  • Performs housekeeping activities as assigned.
  • Performs record keeping duties as required under the direction of management.
  • Work in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) and safe quality food (SQF) standards

 

Communication:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, write effectively, read, comprehend, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to learn to identify product defects.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend written material.
  • Possesses an interest in and an aptitude for mechanics.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to organize, plan, and prioritize.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to concentrate and pay attention to details.
  • Ability to operate and functionally use a computer.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.

Hours of Work:

  • Required to work assigned schedule or 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday. Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed.  Incumbents must be able to complete the full term to the end of August 2026.

As per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Appendix B -

The Company may employ summer students each year between May 1 and September 15 within the Production Associate classification.

The Company will employ students who are of legal age, and who are sons or daughters of Whitby Plant employees. Consideration will be given in the following order:

  1. Those who are children of Whitby Plant employees
  2. Those who have satisfactory previous Ball Whitby Plant experience and with no more than one break not to exceed 18 months in post-secondary education
  3. Students who have completed at least one year of post-secondary education without having experienced a break in their ongoing education and plan to continue
  4. Students just completing high school. 

 

In the event there are more applicants than positions, the preference will go to the employee’s child in order of company service and/or clock number

The Company may hire students other than sons or daughters of employees depending upon availability and the needs of the plant.

Number of students per crew is to be determined but no more than 6 per crew.

The Company will not allow summer students to attain seniority status.

Student employees will not be eligible for group insurance and health benefits, RRSP contributions, or similar benefits other than as required by law.
