Primary purpose of the position:

Provides mechanical engineering project support expertise to the business.  Maintain and improve the mechanical project engineering process and support in all Ball plants. Work with Plant Operations & Production Leaders and Project Engineering Group to execute improvements and/or installation of Production Support Equipment and mechanical systems.

 

What will you be responble for? 

  • Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work environment.
  • Demonstrated expert in one or more areas, including but not limited to equipment, tools, process, project management, and measuring equipment.
  • Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects.  Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources
  • Works under only general direction.  Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.  Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
  • Consults with engineering and manufacturing personnel to assure the use of appropriate and consistent technologies.
  • Responsible for the creation and updating of plant bills of material, layouts, and installation drawings to reflect current and new equipment and building configuration.
  • Creates and updates equipment criteria sheets and specifications for each project. Prepares equipment engineering bid packages for support equipment and initiates requisitions for all equipment based on engineering packages and criteria sheets.  Stores all pertinent information in project files.
  • Provides bid packages/RFQ’s, evaluates and educates potential suppliers/contractors and evaluates bids for equipment, systems, and construction work.
  • Evaluates problems and cost-improvement opportunities in plants, generates and presents alternative solutions for consideration.
  • Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.  Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable and consistent with organization objectives
  • Oversees assigned projects within his/her areas of expertise:  scope, schedule, budget, quality, project team, contractors, plant relations and acceptance, etc.
  • Responsible for the technical review of vendor equipment and other outside engineering drawings and documents for suitability and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provides on-site technical and contractor-management support in the installation, checkout and start-up of equipment and systems.
  • Coordinates activities with vendors supplying hardware and equipment fabricated per drawings and specifications and performs inspection and acceptance of such items.
  • Oversees activities to provide designs and technical assistance as required by manufacturing engineering for support to existing plants and for plant AFE projects.
  • Ensures that cost estimates and forecasts to completion are prepared for work in area of responsibility.
  • Creates project cost estimates equipment within his/her area of expertise used in AFE’s.
  • Provides technical presentations to customers, potential customers, licensees, plants and management.
  • Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts.  Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.

 

What are we looking for? 

  • Broad training in a related field usually acquired through  high school or graduate degree level education or work-related experience
  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Civil or Industrial Engineering
  • Job related experience for 5 year(s) minimum
  • Working knowledge of production equipment for aluminum beverage containers.
  • Self-starter with strong problem solving skills
  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.
  • Automated manufacturing and high speed manufacturing experience. (Preferably in Aluminum Can making industry)
  • Knowledge of ASME B31.3 Process Piping and B31.9 Building Services Piping Codes
  • Familiarity with some or all of the following Utilities and Mechanical Support Systems / Equipment helpful:
  • Compressed Air Systems
  • Industrial Vacuum Pumps
  • Cooling Water Systems / Chillers
  • Hot Water / Steam for Heat Exchange
  • Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers / Dust Collectors
  • Mist Collection
  • Process Ventilation
  • Process Scrap Collection and Compaction
  • HVAC
  • Bulk Storage (Chemical / Coating / Lubricants)
  • Natural Gas Supply
  • Water Supply (Domestic/Potable, Process/RO)
  • Waste Water Treatment / Sewer
  • Fire Protection
  • Project Management experience and/or thorough understanding of Project Management support needs 
  • Strong organizing skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Project.
  • Must maintain professional competence, ethical integrity, knowledge, and skills
  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field.
  • General knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Ensure designs are technically correct and contribute to program goals and success; assignments are more difficult and technically challenging.
  • Willingness to travel 60 - 70%. 

 

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hiring Salary Range: $78,400 - $117,415 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
  • Other Compensation: This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
