Primary purpose of the position: 

Provides mechanical engineering project expertise to the business. Provides on-site technical and contractor-management support in the installation, check-out and start-up of support equipment and associated systems & utilities. Coordinates OEM and SME support for project functional check-out (FCO) and start up assistance  Maintain and improve the mechanical project engineering process and on-site support in all Ball plants. Collaborates with Production and Engineering to execute process improvements in the mechanical engineering project management process.  


Essential Responsible Areas: 

  • Creates and updates equipment criteria sheets and specifications for each project. Prepares equipment engineering bid packages for support equipment and initiates requisitions for all equipment based on engineering packages and criteria sheets.  Stores all pertinent information in project files. Failure to do so may result in production start up delays or repairs. 
  • Guides the successful completion of moderate programs and may function in a project leadership role.  Erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in failure to achieve major organizational objectives.
  • Work is performed without appreciable direction.  Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
  • Demonstrated mastery in one or more areas, including but not limited to equipment, tools, process, project management, and measuring equipment
  • Fully competent in core skills, contributes to effective producibility of designs, and to cost, budget, and schedule constraints.  Assignments may be very diverse or technically difficult.
  • Main point of contact for on-site technical and contractor-management support in the installation, checkout and start-up of equipment and systems.
  • Directs activities with vendors supplying hardware and equipment fabricated per drawings and specifications and performs inspection and acceptance of such items. Lack of attention to detail may result in  inoperable equipment and project setbacks. 
  • Develops technical solutions to complex equipment problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. 
  • Generates overall plans, layouts, schematics, flow diagrams, etc. for concept and implementation phases of projects. This includes conveying and machinery in manufacturing process. 
  • Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects.  Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.
  • Interface effectively with people at all levels and from diverse areas, seek out responsibilities and opportunities to contribute, regularly meets with customers, provide leadership to groups and teams and guidance to less experienced employees.


Position Requirement & competencies:

  • Broad training in a related field usually acquired through  a college degree level education or work-related experience
  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
  • Job related experience for 5 year(s) minimum
  • Up to 65% travel - position is eligible for travel stipend
  • Working knowledge of production equipment for aluminium beverage containers.
  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated mastery in one or more areas, including but not limited to equipment, tools, process, project management, and measuring equipment.
  • Effective in working with people at all levels and with outside customers; able and willing to contribute wherever and however needed; provides support and guidance to project activities and senior level management.
  • Problem Solving.  Uses rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; probes all fruitful sources for answers; can see hidden problems; is excellent at honest analysis; looks beyond the obvious and doesn’t stop at the first answers.
  • Discipline specialist and has full knowledge of other related engineering areas, such as equipment process and design 
  • Understanding of Project Management support needs  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills



  • Automated manufacturing and high speed manufacturing experience. (Preferably in Aluminium can making industry)
  • Knowledge of ASME B31.3 Process Piping and B31.9 Building Services Piping Codes
  • Discipline specialist and has full knowledge of other related engineering areas, such as equipment
  • Familiarity with some or all of the following Utilities and Mechanical Support Systems / Equipment preferred:
    • Industrial Vacuum Pumps
    • Compressed Air Systems
    • Cooling Water Systems / Chillers
    • Hot Water / Steam for Heat Exchange
    • Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers / Dust Collectors
    • Mist Collection
    • Process Ventilation
    • Understanding of Project Management support needs  
    • Proficient in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and Project
    • Process Scrap Collection and Compaction
    • HVAC
    • Bulk Storage (Chemical / Coating / Lubricants)
    • Natural Gas Supply
    • Water Supply (Domestic/Potable, Process/RO)
    • Waste Water Treatment / Sewer
    • Fire Protection


Compensation & Benefits:


  • Hiring Salary Range: $87,800-$138,000  (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
  • This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
