Position Overview:
As the Manager, Research & Development (R&D) Metal Innovation Design, you are a leader in the Global R&D Metal Innovation team; reporting to the Global Head of Innovation and Product Management. You will contribute to the success of Ball by providing leadership to a team of 3 (three) to 5 (five) CAD drafters & designers and ensure all CAD design work from the Innovation Metal Product Engineering team is completed on time and to a high level of quality.
Your Key Areas of Responsibility Include:
- Oversee daily activities, direct workflow and manage priorities for tooling design, product package testing, metrology lab and tool room. Generate processes and metrics to ensure productivity and high quality standards; Manage a team responsible for maintaining product testing lab, metrology lab, and tool room inventory. Diligent record keeping, cleanliness and organization required.
- Work collaboratively with Innovation Leadership to set project priorities and ensure smooth workflows between design and innovation leadership across metal, non-metal, & process innovation teams.
- Support and manage work requests from engineers to ensure tooling design, product package testing and tooling inspection work is complete. Provide prompt communication back to engineering team on work status.
- Create budget, issue purchase orders and keep metrology lab equipment calibration up to date using 3rd party suppliers.
- Generate and maintain standards for Innovation regarding Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), drawing templates, Bills of Materials (BOM’s) and Teamcenter entry.
- Participate as an active designer and use Siemens NX to generate 3D model files and associated dimensional drawings for high speed metal forming tools, machine change parts, and product testing equipment. Use Siemens NX to generate 3D model files of products, renderings of products, and associated tooling layouts and analysis.
- Lead the team responsible for the metrology tool room and ensure all calibrations and certifications are up-to-date and recorded. Lead the team responsible for the Innovation tool room for inventory and proper inspection of all Innovation tooling.
- Work with 3rd party grinding and machine shops to accurately communicate technical drawing intent when tooling drawing questions arise. Quote and issue purchasing requests for tooling and parts as needed.
- Recommend software and processes that ensure our drafting and technical documentation systems are efficient, accurate and properly archived; explore automation opportunities to streamline design & drafting processes where possible.
- Develop, qualify, and deploy extended resource strategy and network to have 3rd party suppliers, resources available to create an outlet for times of increased design needs / workload
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor degree in in Engineering or other relevant technical disciple or equivalent work-related experience.
- 8 or more years experience in beverage can tooling design or equivalent field.
- Experience in reading and understand engineering and isometric drawings.
- Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience of 5+ years in drafting of tooling and high tolerance fits.
- Demonstrated skills:
- Strong leadership skills and ability to lead small dynamic teams.
- Strong ability to organize, clean and maintain various testing records.
- Self-motivated, process-oriented.
- Effective, clear, concise verbal and written communication skills.
- High proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel, Word and Outlook.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- 2+ years of experience with Siemens NX.
- Experience using metrology measuring equipment.
- Experience with BlueCielo Meridian and/or Siemens Teamcenter.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hiring Salary Range: $96,000 - $137,180 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
- Onsite Work Environment: This position is based in Westminster, CO and requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site 5 days per week. Travel and local commute between Ball locations and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
- This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
