Primary Purpose of Position:         

This position is being created to standardize and improve the coordination between our internal procurement teams, customers and coating suppliers at a technical level across Ball Global Beverage.  By establishing technical coating expertise at the global level, we can drive a higher level of accountability to our existing suppliers and mitigate risk when bringing on new suppliers and/or new coatings.  By standardizing the procedure and process for testing and qualifying new coatings, we can more quickly leverage new technologies across Ball’s global footprint. Furthermore, we can identify with our procurement and commercial teams where we can drive out complexity and improve our manufacturing flexibility through standardization of ODM specifications. 


Essential Functions:

  • Establish and maintain Global Coating Qualification Strategy – with the goal of reducing complexity and optimizing ODM (Other Direct Materials, non-metal) cost throughout Ball’s global footprint.
  • Benchmark and align ODM qualification protocols throughout Ball’s global regional businesses.
  • Drive standardization of specifications related to coating make and application.
  • Collaborate with Global Innovation and Regional Engineering coating resources to understand and prioritize new coating development based on global strategy.
  • Lead collaborative continuous improvement projects with our coating suppliers leveraging lean six sigma tools to optimize performance in Ball’s manufacturing processes.
  • Report on global coating supplier performance and establish preferred performance criteria based on data.
  • Establish and lead global qualification process for new ODM suppliers.
  • Act as a bridge between global and regional functions of procurement, quality, commercial and engineering to align procurement decisions on a cohesive ODM technical strategy.
  • Design and execute global rollout strategies for new materials.
  • Develop effective audits and identify key input variables in supplier plants that affect usage and performance.
  • Build trust and alignment between suppliers and can manufacturers by establishing common goals.
  • Partner with external resources to build Ball capability in the understanding of coatings impact on can making.


Position Requirements:

  • Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college or graduate degree level education or work-related experience
  • Job related experience for 10 year(s) minimum
  • Certifications/Licenses/Other:  BS or MS Degree in Chemistry or related field
  • Direct experience in a technical role at a coating supplier, preferably supplying the CBS or CES industries, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Experience and familiarity with an internationally recognized QMS such as ISO 9001
  • Self-Motivated with a desire to make an impact
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail
  • Exemplary communication and presentation skills
  • Outstanding computer skills in a Microsoft Windows Environment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to resolve issues of conflict in a tactful and professional manner
  • 25-50% of travel

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hiring Salary Range: $98,500 - $150,500 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
  • Other Compensation:   This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
