Environmental Health & Safety Engineer/Senior Engineer

Position Overview:
As an Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Engineer or Senior Engineer, you are a key member of the North & Central America (NCA) Environmental, Health and Safety Team, reporting to the Manager, Environmental Health & Safety.
You will contribute to the success of Ball by supporting and leading efforts to ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations, while driving continuous improvement in EHS programs and systems across the business.
Your Key Areas of Responsibility Include:
ENGINEER LEVEL:
- Develop and maintain EH&S programs to meet federal, state, and local requirements.
- Conduct risk assessments and help integrate environmental, health and safety practices into daily operations.
- Support responses to regulatory citations or notices of violation.
- Complete required EH&S reports (e.g., OSHA, EPA) and maintain documentation.
- Train salaried and hourly employees on EH&S procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Promote a culture of safety through coaching and mentoring.
- Support incident investigations to identify root causes and viable solutions.
- Participate in Ball Operational Excellence EH&S implementation efforts that incorporate ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements.
- Support the collection of industrial hygiene samples to ensure safe exposure levels.
- Use EH&S software tools to support compliance and reporting.
- Travel regularly to facilities and provide on-site compliance support, including on-call after hours as needed.
SENIOR ENGINEER:
- Lead development of long-term EHS compliance strategies and cost-effective solutions.
- Provide technical support to plants, licensees, and engineering teams.
- Prepare and negotiate permit applications, compliance plans, and variance requests.
- Represent Ball in discussions with regulatory agencies and testify at hearings.
- Conduct advanced EH&S assessments and recommend improvements to reduce risk and cost.
- Manage and provide input to Ball Operational Excellence EH&S systems aligned with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ANSI Z-10 standards.
- Monitor regulatory changes and advise leadership on business impacts.
- Accompany inspectors during audits and ensure proper inspection protocols.
- Deliver high-impact EH&S presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Travel regularly to facilities and provide on-site compliance support, including on-call after hours as needed.
Required Skill and Experience:
Engineer Level:
- 2 to 4 years of experience in EH&S or related field.
Senior Engineer:
- 4 (four) or more years of experince with demonstrated leadership in EH&S compliance.
BOTH:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Environmental), Health & Safety or related field or equivalent work experience & education in EH&S or environmental roles.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed.
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to conduct risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Proficiency in EHS software tools and data management.
- Experience in manufacturing or industrial environments with an understanding of manufacturing processes and regulatory impacts.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Certifications or Knowledge:
- Professional certifications (e.g., P.E. CSP, CIH, CHMM).
- Experience negotiating with regulatory agencies.
- Advanced knowledge of environmental permitting and industrial hygiene.
- Familiarity with ANSI Z-10 and sustainability frameworks.
Compensation & Benefits
Engineer Level:
- Hiring Salary Range: $ 74,600 - $104,160 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
Senior Engineer Level:
- Hiring Salary Range: $ 85,100 - $118, 760 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
