JOB TITLE            : Shift  Manager

REPORTING TO : Asst. Plant Manager

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Role of shift manager is to co-ordinate people, production and equipment to ensure a safe, consistent, complying to quality specification, profitable and smooth running shift. This is achieved by a thorough understanding and awareness of the operation; customer requirements; excellent people skills; quick and effective decision-making; and thorough planning, organizing and follow up. Shift manager will effectively manage the full production and engineering operation on a shift basis and will be responsible for all Production, safety, and quality key deliverables in his shift. He will continuously strive to develop his team’s technical mastery and operational skills through coaching and mentoring.

Shift Manager will lead one of the area teams in the plant, through which he will implement the continuous improvement activities in the area using lean tools such as 5S, TPM, SMED.

 

KEY ACTIVITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

  • Lead the production line operation in accordance with plant policies and procedures. Responsible to meet shift production, quality goals. Take full responsibility of the shift in terms of management of staff, management of production and quality targets and to ensure the smooth running of the production processes. Lead team in operating with a high level of efficiency, integrity and enthusiasm, striving to achieve excellence in all endeavors.
  • Supervise the process and personnel in his team to ensure achievement of production targets through the minimizing of downtime and production losses etc. Responsible for shift schedule and planning including : manpower planning, work load assignments/rotations, employee training, employee vacations, employee breaks, overtime assignment, back-up for absent employees, and shift rotations.
  • Schedule and conduct shift meetings and plan for review meetings as necessary to ensure job assigned to individuals completed efficiently. Work closely with other Shift managers to ensure production handovers are effective communications tools.
  • Ensures quality standards are maintained at all times and to minimize spoilage to target levels. Responsible for quality control in the shift and ensures and quality product is produced consistently. Coordinates adjustments as necessary during shift to produce product within specifications. Reject product outside of specifications, holds any production out of range for further inspection / approval as needed.
  • Ensure standard of equipment setting and operating conditions are maintained to achieve the required product specification and quality. As part of this task, he periodically have walk around tours in production area, inspect the equipment and check Inspection / PM checklists randomly and ensure they are completed / maintained as needed.
  • Investigate/report equipment/process defects promptly to enable corrective action to be taken. Communicate with other Shift managers / engineering department effectively. Report any deviations in equipment / follow-ups through both verbal and written communication to all stake holders including Assistant Plant Manager.
  • Lead daily Plant Morning meetings while in day shift. Communicate effectively for the issues related to safety, quality, Maintenance, and present it with supporting statistics to show the losses and get necessary resources / support allocated.
  • Maintain housekeeping to the standard defined in the Housekeeping and Hygiene procedure to ensure a clean and safe workplace. Take handover of the equipment at beginning of shift / after maintenance / after shutdown only if all housekeeping and hygiene conditions are met.
  • Ensure the shift team meets the plant environmental standards and targets. Segregate and Handle all the solid waste / hazardous waste generated as per procedure.
  • Promote and maintain good industrial relations and follow legislative requirements.
  • Follow and maintain organization’s SOPs and safe working practices. Ensure that Health and Safety rules and regulations are adhered to during the shift and all matters relating to this are dealt with using the resources within the company in line with the companies Health and Safety policy.
  • Ensure Problem solving and trouble shooting skills are used and ensure that all shift team members can identify root causes and take fast effective action to resolve the problems in hand.
  • Have an active role in the company’s continuous improvement plan to achieve plans for future growth within the company. As part of this lead one of the area team to drive Lean systems and implement the continuous improvement activities in the area using lean tools such as 5S, TPM, SMED
  • Conduct employee performance reviews and ensure regular feedback to APM about employee performance. 
  • Manage, develop and motivate direct reporting staff. Ensure that the training skills are met for current and future demands of the shift. As part of this, asses the employee skills through skill matrix, make action plan for development and establish the employee training plan. Provide extensive training to employees to improve skill level.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate accident investigations in accordance with company procedures. Responsible for Hazard analysis / Job safety analysis for non-routine works conducted in the shift and ensure proper corrective actions / risk containment is done before starting the job.
  • Complete all shift reports and follow up all shift paper work request from his subordinates.
  • Make appropriate decisions in the shift while following the company’s organizational structure.

Lead the plant in emergencies (Fire evacuation, Fire alarm) in his shift. Communicate effectively as per the procedure.

 

 

CAPABILITY REQUIREMENTS OF THE ROLE

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Degree in Industrial/ mechanical/ production/ operations engineering.

Certified training in Green Belt will be added advantage

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

  • 6+ years relevant experience with sound knowledge supervising / managing production activities.
  • A manufacturing background in a high speed, high volume continuous process preferably FMCG.
  • Experience in two piece aluminum can manufacturing will be added advantage.

             SAP production module.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

 

  • Must be able to work shifts and able to work extended hours on occasions when required.
  • Successful track record in managing a team of approx. 20 members in production environment in combination with proven record of task achievement.
  • Ability to prioritize workload based upon the plant requirements and objectives. Good Coordination skill and follow-up skill.
  • Knowledge of implementation of various lean tools FMEA, PPAP, SPC, MSA, & Kaizen, Poka-yoke etc.
  • Good computer skills – ability to manage via computerized data.
