Position overview:
As the Junior Engineering - Printing, you’re a key member of the Shift Operations Team, reporting to the Shift Manager. You will contribute to the success of Ball by contributing for smooth operation and maintenance of Printers in can making line. You will have to work safely and produce quality product in the Printing area. You will have strive hard to achieve area KPI’s through active participation and teamwork and will work actively in improvement activities, TPM, 5’s activities in the area. You will have to play key role in size changeovers / Lable changes and achieve best in class changeover time in the Printers.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Responsible of Operation of Printers. He will ensure the Printers are utilized and operated to their optimum speed and efficiency.
- Conducts Safety checks in printers within first two hours of start of shift and logs down findings and corrective actions.
- Conducts Operation / Maintenance checks in the printers and takes corrective actions on time. If any support is needed, he will discuss with area leader and completes the corrective actions. Updates machine log books, Note down the corrective action taken in the shift.
- Ensure the cans produced in Printer meet all quality specification. Does the Quality checks takes corrective actions on time for any deviation. Ensure color shades meets the quality specification / quality standard all the time.
- Maintains Printer area and Equipment in accordance with housekeeping and hygiene standard. Maintains Housekeeping during shift hours and handovers the shift with good housekeeping.
- Responsible for printing area spoilage target. Addresses the spoilage concerns (shade variation, missing colors, and registration issues etc.) and take swift action to get the abnormal condition back on track.
- Responsible for lable changes. Responsible for CCP- Mixed lables. Follows proper procedure / measures in his shift to control the CCP. Ensure lable changes are done with best in class time, and least scrap during lable changes. Ensure proper line clearance is done, all old lable cans (including scrap cans) are removed from area so that Mixed lables are not passed to customers.
- Responsible for Printer Trips. Ensure the printer trips are within limit by keeping all process parameters and conditions in specification.
- Utilize the opportunities (Standby time, lable change time or any other natural downtime) and does Corrective maintenance activity in printer as planned / requested by team leader.
- Safety: Near miss reporting. Participates in Behavior based safety (BBS). Attends all safety trainings. Follows department and plant safe practices. Uses proper tools in his work and maintains / stores them safely.
- Responsible for handling Flammable liquids safely in printer area. Handles, stores, uses and disposes all flammable liquids and associated waste (soaked rags etc) in accordance with plant standard.
- Understand solid waste management system. Ensure all the waste generated (including hazardous wastes) in the area are segregated / handles and disposed-off according to the plant standard.
- Beginning of shift take the handover from the outgoing shift team member, understand the issues in the area, actions taken. Discuss with team leader and plan for the day. Ensure to receive the area with proper housekeeping, all scrap bin cleared and scrap is counted.
- Actively participate in companies Continuous Improvement initiatives e.g. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, SMED, 5S, ISO, etc. Conduct lean manufacturing activities and participate in audits as per company requirements. Attend area team meetings on periodical basis. Drives area improvement agenda based on meeting outcomes.
- Gain experience in printer periodic maintenance. Support engineering resources for periodic maintenance. Gain mastery in changing inkers / Inker components and Setting up after inker changes. Works closely with engineering team and supports the Maintenance and up-keeping of Printer area equipment.
- Gain expertise in registration, print pressure set up and lable set ups. Gain expertise in audit / levelling / adjusting toe-in and mandrel circle of printers. Support engineering resources for periodic maintenance.
- Work closely with engineering resources for changeover activities.
- Update the area log book. Note down the corrective action taken in the shift.
- Responsible for ink and Overvarnish consumption in his shift. Maintain optimum ink quantity / OV weightage throughout the shift to get the consumption numbers at target. Take corrective actions for deviations.
- Responsible for corrective Maintenance on Printers during his shift. Work on instruction from team leader / Engineering resources to get the equipment back in operation with least possible downtime.
- Gives input for controlling of consumables (Blankets, Plates, Alcohol, cleaning aids, brush, Stripper, pad bumpers, suction cups, fountain blades), machine spares (Ductor roll, form roll, solenoids, belts, bearings, pin chain) to team leader / maintenance resources and help achieve maintenance spending target.
- Work closely with engineering resources for changeover activities. Gain knowledge and experience in Printer changeover activities.
Follows and maintain organization’s SOPs and safe working practices. Comply with any legal, environmental and safety, BRC requirements and/or checks.
Educational qualification, Experience and skills required:
Diploma in Mechanical engineering (4)
- 3 years’ experience in operation and maintenance in a manufacturing background (Textile / Printing) with Experience in Mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting and process set up.
- Should have experience of Gearboxes, Pumps, lubrication, replacing Motors, repair of precision machines, alignment, and adjustment and set up of machine after maintenance. Imported printing machine operation maintenance will be added advantage.
- Experience in LPG fired equipment such as boilers and ovens will be added advantage.
Diploma in printing technology (4)
- 3 years Operation / maintenance experience in medium scale printing plant, either metal decoration, Newspaper, or other high speed lithography equipment.
- Hands on experience in operation and maintenance of high speed Imported Printing machines and Inkers.
Additional Skills
- Must be able to work shifts and able to work extended hours on occasions when required.
- Computer literacy and the ability to generate reports. Ability to read, understand and develop engineering drawings.
- Experience in CTP plate making will be added advantage.List out no more than 7, essential-only requirements.
- Working knowledge of Health and Safety work practises. Must be able to work with flammable liquids and knows to handle hazardous wastes.
