Position overview:


To identifiy and implement sustainability best practices, projects and training for the Ball Packaging plants in Europe, Middle East and Asia.  This role is tasked with successfully achieving divisional goals related to Sustainability KPIs and executing improvements in the Thermal Applications found in can-making operations.  The Thermal improvements are focused on efficiency gains in Electricity, Natural Gas, Water and Waste-Generation processes.  

Key responsibilities include:


  • Identified as a Senior Engineer/Subject Matter Expert (SME) with regards to Gas Trains, Natural Gas Controls, Alternative Heating Methods, and Thermal Applications that are either used or have the potential of being used in a Can-Making Plant.  Elevated technical aptitude with regard to Ovens, Boilers, RTO’s and other Thermal Equipment.
  • Creates / Understands / Implements the Global Standards that lead to the best-in-class Electricity, Natural Gas, Water and Waste-Generation.  Utilizes external industrial applications, guiding theoretical principles, and personal technical experience to identify, vet, and roll out Global Standards pertaining to Thermal optimization.
  • Trains Employees on process steps and best practices with regards to the efficient use of Electricity, Natural Gas, Water and Waste-Generation.  Expert in machine balancing and optimization of various models of thermal equipment.  
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge and utilization of Lean Six Sigma in all phases of the implementation of Electricity, Natural Gas, Water and Waste-Generation Global Standards.  Identifies key performance indicators for each thermal process and develops standard plans to track and react to data accordingly.
  • Develops / Plans / Executes capital projects. Calls upon vast technical expertise to execute high caliber projects with minimal direction.  Develops complex project scopes from the ground up, fosters strategic internal and external partnerships in the planning phase, and executes projects in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Converts guidance and data from Global Sustainability Engineering into Strategy and Action Plans for the EMEA region. Engages the plant teams and actively supports the roll-out of said strategic plans.  Identifies and engages third party resources to support and execute, as required. 
  • Collaborates with supply base to identify new sustainability technologies with a focus on thermal optimization opportunities.
  • Identifies technical resources, both internally in the Ball network and externally with past or future suppliers. Negotiates with vendors to review scopes, proposals, and service agreements.  Aids in the preparation and presentation of high-level strategic reviews and performance updates for the region.

Experience and skills required:


  • University level degree or work-related experience.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience within high speed packaging manufacturing environment.

  • Technical expert in thermal operations.  Experience with Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers, Ovens, Gas Trains, Boilers, Hot Water Heaters, and Heat Recovery Systems.

  • Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Project.

  • Excellent English communication skills - verbal, written and presentation skills.

  • Knowledge of contracts and specifications.

  • Excellent program/project management skills.

  • Financial literacy and business acumen with the ability to objectively assess projects and teams and meet cost, margin, and profitability targets.

  • Willing and able to travel 60% to 80% of working time.
