Software Engineer I – Microservices


What You’ll Do:


  • In this position, you will enable our customers to stay ahead of rapidly evolving threats to national security in the air and space domains by building systems that are secure, resilient and scalable using the latest cloud-native technologies and agile software development methods. 
  • Work with customer and team members to understand project requirements and scope.
  • Design/Develop/modify software for microservices and related systems.
  • Perform full software life cycle functions including software requirements, architecture, design, code, test, integration, and deployment.
  • Develop software within the defined AGILE process.
  • Support the Ops team in deploying and maintaining the system in test and production environments
  • Mentor junior engineers with the project.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units, and the Company.  Interact appropriately with others to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You’ll Need:


  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented design.
  • Knowledge of algorithm design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of one or more modern programing languages such as C++, Java, Python, Ruby or JavaScript.
  • Experience with distributed computing and large-scale systems.
  • Experience with message broker services.
  • Experience with IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS technologies.
  • Experience with one or more commercial cloud services such as AWS, AZURE, GCP, etc.
  • Experience with microservices design and implementation.
  • Experience with agile software development processes.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills.
  • Experience with one or more of the following technologies is preferred:
    • Linux
    • AWS, Azure or other commercial cloud service providers
    • Docker or similar container technology
    • Kubernetes, OpenShift or similar container orchestration technology
    • Istio or similar service mesh technology
    • Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, or similar message broker technologies
    • Helm package manager
    • Google Protocol Buffers
    • XML and XSDs
    • JSON
    • Network protocols, e.g., TCP and UDP


Flexible On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three or more days per work week. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.


Working Conditions:

  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.  By applying to this position, you are agreeing to complete a National Security Clearance Pre-Screen Questionnaire to evaluate your general ability to obtain the required security clearance or government customer access associated with this position.

Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $86,000 - $107,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
