Human Factors Professional II – Data Science/ Modeling


Join a fast-paced team of engineers and scientists conducting cutting edge research for the US Air Force. You will work alongside Ball Aerospace and US Air Force scientists and engineers to answer questions that increase the capabilities of our nation’s military. Our team’s goal is to understand how a broad range of topics intersect to lead to warfighter success. We work to understand human behavior and perceptual capabilities, physical acoustics properties of the environment, and the strengths and limitations of existing equipment and processes to optimize human performance in the next generation of Air Force systems. Our unique customers give you the opportunity for interesting and meaningful work. Our technologies have been used DoD wide as well as by civilian government and commercial organizations.


In this position, you will apply your skills in data processing, statistical analysis, and machine learning to deliver novel solutions to a diverse set of problems. Your valuable input will be used to guide future research projects and hone the questions we ask about existing datasets. These results will transition to recommendations for external customers and/or be disseminated to the broader scientific community at academic conferences and in peer reviewed journal articles. We encourage our team to be constant learners; staying current on industry best practices, and thinking outside the box.


What You’ll Do:


  • Seek out opportunities to answer research questions and solve problems using your data analysis and machine learning skills.
  • Work closely with Ball teammates and our government customer to deeply understand ongoing research and existing datasets.
  • Use your machine learning and data processing expertise to offer new answers to challenging questions.
  • Distill large, complex datasets into useful information.
  • Develop presentations to present results to teammates and internal and external customers.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You’ll Need:


  • BS degree or higher in or a related technical field is required plus 4 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of related experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Human Factors Science, orCognitive Psychology preferred.
  • Extensive experience in at least two of the following: Python, R, Matlab.
  • Experience with Python preferred.
  • Experience using machine learning to solve real-world problems.
  • Familiarity with dimensional reduction techniques and model interpretability.
  • Experience in data analysis and visualization.
  • Strong desire to collaborate and self organize.


Flexible On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three or more days per work week. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $73,500 - $99,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
