Engineer II – Space Vehicle Ops – Springfield, VA

 

Our Space Vehicle Ops Engineer II provides leadership and direct support to ensure health and safety, longevity, and daily mission support to on orbit space vehicles. This includes space vehicle command and control, telemetry analysis, trending, orbit analysis, sensor calibrations, and anomaly resolution. 

 

What You’ll Do: 

 

  • Provide space operational and vehicle engineering support as a subject matter expert for:
    • Space vehicle payload and bus operations
    • Space vehicle command and control
    • Space vehicle performance metrics, telemetry trending and analysis
    • Space vehicle operational planning and execution
    • Space vehicle anomaly resolution
    • Space vehicle operational capability assessment
    • Customer working groups and reviews
    • Space vehicle calibrations and testing
  • Maintain space vehicle trending software:
    • Understand, use, and modify MATLAB-based trending scripts
    • Support models and simulations and interfacing systems
    • Track and plan technical refresh hardware and software
  • Develop and update:
    • Reports, status updates and presentations
    • Operational procedures and instructions
    • Standard operational procedures (SOPs)
    • Training materials and references
    • Analysis tools (Matlab, etc)
    • Workarounds, fixes, and permanent changes in response to anomalous space vehicle operations
  • Ensure all business is conducted using the highest ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, and regulations.
  • Identify and ensure required compliance with the government and company regulation, policies/procedures and guidelines; negotiate acceptance/ approval of all program plans with internal interfaces and the customer.
  • Employ proactive risk and opportunity management processes and practices to mitigate or capture potential program issues and improvements.
  • Create a motivational environment where team members understand the mission, are fully engaged, and empowered to execute, and are recognized for their performance.
  • Resolve conflicts, demands and priorities on assigned programs.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

 

What You’ll Need: 

 

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 5 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active TS/SCI CI Polygraph security clearance is required.
  • Background in space operations, math, science, and technical applications preferred.
  • Ability to use other analysis tools (STK, Microsoft Suite, other in-house tools).
  • Ability to maintain continuous inter-organizational and outside customer contacts and represent the customer within the Space Operations Community agencies and related government agencies. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be wholly at ease and comfortable interfacing with government customers, co-workers, and teammates within industry and the government at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels and seek out responsibilities and opportunities to contribute to the team
  • Ability to develop solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity, thorough research, and experience in the Space Operations Community
  • Ability to understand and apply knowledge, experience, and skills to the toughest tasks and problems without supervision. 

 

Full-Time On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site full-time. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment at the customer site located in Springfield, Virginia.
  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations CONUS and OCONUS locations may be required on a limited basis.

 

Verification that your current security clearance or government customer access meets the requirement for this position will be required.

Compensation & Benefits:

 

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $118,500 - $145,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
