Technical Specialist I – Instrumentation

 

Ball Aerospace is currently recruiting for an R&D laboratory technician to assist engineers and scientists in the design, development, and execution of laser-related experiments.  Individual will participate in test planning, setting up data acquisition systems, operating high energy lasers (HEL), developing operational procedures, procuring laboratory equipment, calibrating TMDE (test measurement and diagnostic equipment), supporting logistics necessary to execute field-test experiments, installing optical beam trains, and executing other relevant research and development (R&D) laboratory tasks.

 

What You’ll Do:

 

  • Participate in laboratory/experiment set-up, test execution, data collection, and other test related laboratory functions; For example, set-up, troubleshoot as required, and test diagnostics and data acquisition equipment.
  • Utilize National Instruments data acquisition and control hardware, and LabView software tools. Motion control experience using other standard stages, controllers, and software could also be valuable.
  • Fabricate, test and/or troubleshoot prototype and breadboard electronics, cabling, hardware and software applications.
  • Support fabrication of test stands, and in some cases, surrogate test articles. Efforts may include interpreting drawings for welding, electrical, cable fabrication, and mechanical assembly.
  • Utilize standard laboratory instrumentation such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, general optical bench equipment, and data-acquisition hardware/software (National Instruments based) to conduct experiments and collect data.
  • Perform calibration of infrared measurement devices using blackbody sources and assist in the calibration of NIST traceable devices.
  • Conduct cursory analyses of data using basic math skills.
  • Review and accurately interpret and implement schematics, drawings, specifications, and procedures as required.
  • Work within small groups to maintain the laboratory facility to meet or exceed Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and Ball Aerospace quality assurance (QA) requirements by maintaining calibration and maintenance schedules, and positively tracking high value assets.
  • Support efforts of a team of technicians and/or outside contractors to upgrade/improve laboratory facilities and make continuous improvement suggestions in areas of responsibility.
  • Support EHS processes and procedures; recognize safety hazards, including hazardous materials, and pursue corrective action when necessary.
  • Provide advanced instruction and training on specialized procedures and techniques to other employees and may develop processes and procedures essential to departmental compliance.
  • Provide detailed written documentation as required to meet contractual obligations and supplement standard laboratory documentation.
  • Effective communications and regular interaction with colleagues and customers.
  • Cross-train with other tasks across the organization.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule, while being flexible enough to work with changing customer requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

 

What You’ll Need:

 

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus 12 years or more related experience or a related 2-year technical degree and 10 years or more related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Bachelor’s, may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • AS degree or higher in a related technical field plus 10 or more years related experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in high-energy laser effects testing preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in several of the following: general electronics, test/safety planning, setting up optical beam trains, hazardous waste material procedures/protocol, data-acquisition hardware and software, laboratory computers, LabVIEW programming, and experience working in a small team environment associated with test activities.
  • Familiarity or knowledgeable with general laboratory equipment and logistics.
  • Familiarity with standard Microsoft software tools. 
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required.

 

Full-Time On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site full-time. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:

 

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $32.21 - $43.51 per hour (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
