EO Laser Systems Engineer II


Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. is currently recruiting for an established systems engineer with a desire to assist a research focused team in the design and development of emerging laser and laser related technologies in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The successful candidate will collaborate with managers, engineers, scientists, experimentalists, and other project participants to lead the system engineering aspects of developing and demonstrating advanced laser technology. Typical systems will be state-of-the-art prototypes for demonstrating new capability, technology, or maturity. Emphasis of this position is on advancing the state-of-the-art of laser technology for US Government applications.


What You’ll Do:


  • Assist in the conception, development, and implementation of integrated solutions for developing lasers and associated electro-optical systems using industry accepted engineering techniques, practices, and procedures.  Systems may be laboratory or field prototypes or flight-qualifiable demonstrators.
  • Oversee the tracking, management and documentation of overall subsystem technical specifications and requirements to ensure that design concepts conform to project goals such as performance, size, weight, power, etc.
  • Manage Risk Management Tracking documentation in collaboration with team scientists and engineers.
  • Assist in the definition and documentation of interfaces between the major subsystems of a laser system, such as laser, power, thermal, opto-mechanical, controls and beam transfer.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other project participants including scientists, modelers, and engineers to facilitate the sharing of information to support systems engineering activities.   
  • Collaborate with other project participants to support risk-reduction analysis, demonstrations, or experiments.
  • Conduct analysis and trade-studies to guide hardware selection and development.
  • Contribute to the preparation and presentation of major presentations to internal and external customers including status presentation, design trade studies, preliminary design reviews and system design reviews.
  • Prepare engineering reports and other associated engineering documents
  • Develop strong professional relationships with wide range of project participants and contribute to positive and productive work environment.
  • Provide communications to facilitate project progress.
  • Follow Department of Defense procedures for the proper usage and safeguarding of classified information.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary. 


What You’ll Need:


  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 5 or more years related experience. An advanced degree preferred.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education
  • Related experience performing systems engineering. 
  • Experience with electro-optical or laser systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated communication skills.


Flexible On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three or more days per work week. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $108,000 - $133,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
